The Map
The Map is a highly complex charmed object created by Fargus Phobos to locate Death Eaters and put them on a physical map by looking for a special magical trace left by the Dark Mark.

Up until quite recently, the map could only show locations of Death Eaters (without names) and only when their mark was active (when they are being summoned).

Due to a very select few Order Members (volunteers?) the map has been modified to show the names of the summoned Death Eaters yet the names still only appear when their mark is active.

History

While doing research in his lab, Fargus Phobos stumbled upon a way to trace part of the spell that is used by he-who-shall-not-be-named when he summons death eaters using the dark mark. Slowly but surely the secret project evolved into creating a map that could identify and locate the summoned.

Nearing the completion of the project the lab exploded due to sabotage after and the map went missing. Phobos was taken to St.Mungos and held there for months, doctors said he would never fully recover from the accident. Fargus' mind was permanently 'shattered' by the explosion combined with the stress of failure. Although he had a handful of trusted assistants all seemed to have gone missing after the accident and had been impossible to track down.

A recent tip by the last minister of magic, Shannon Carlyle, led to the recovery of the map by The Order last fall. Since then the map has been worked on by various members to the state that it's in now.

Currently the map's location is only known to 3 people (Dumbledore, Lenore Grey, and Volunteer) The map is in near constant motion so that Death Eaters cannot pinpoint it's magic.

The map is now known to still be in existence by the Death Eaters and they have been trying to find and destroy it.

Overall there is still a lot of random extras that could/need to be added into this plot.

  • We'd LOVE for the 3rd person that knows where the map is to be one of the Extremists so that they have seen the map and know some of the names at the ministry.
  • The Assistants to Phobos: there was talk of Olivia's Parents and Rowan's father?
  • Death Eaters that set up the sabotage (this could also be one of the apprentices)

Is this for active characters only or can we volunteer certain NPCs?

depends? we're not against npc's but we'd prefer active characters to get more involvement.

I was referring more to backstory than current events.

Then, sure, I'd love to stick my thumb in the pie. But first a question: what kind of magic was used to create the map? Meaning what sort of spells did they base it on?

oh geeez.

ummmm

i'll get back to you in more detail after i research but off hand i'd say summoning spells, a lot of charms and some form of alchemy (probably involving the ink or parchment).

May I suggest something then?

Carpets!

Rug-making is one of the oldest crafts known to civilization; I’m sure the wizard world has its own history pertaining to the work. Carpets are also thought to be the invention of nomads, and who better to help out with a magical atlas? The idea of knotted threads, combining color and length, to construct precise, complex patterns—wouldn’t that complement well the idea of weaving together a spell to arrest names and coordinates?

You mentioned ink and parchment. Well, throughout history dyeing has been one of the most elaborate and coveted sciences. Families built generations, and reputations, upon the alchemical secret of some particular tint hidden in the family vault.

Oh, Phobos as in Boyko? Niiice.

It's times like these I wish I had like a pureblood or halfblood.

Lil is an extremist, but I don't know how much sense her knowing about the map makes, since she's young and all. I'll happily volunteer her, though.
